Thoughts on Solo Tabletop Gaming Appreciation Month

Solo Nexus has declared November 2011 as "Solo Tabletop Gaming Appreciation Month" and has issued a call for solo gamers to commit to some form of solo gaming project prior to the start of that month.

While I'm hesitant to firmly commit to anything just yet (November still seems like a long way off, and I do suffer from the all-too-common "ooh, shiny" complex) I do have a couple of ideas that I'm considering.

Option 1. Running a solo Labyrinth Lord campaign using some sort of randomizing GM device. I've done this before, and I have the Mythic GM Emulator which is always a popular choice. I've also been thinking about using instead the "Solo Story System" available for free at RPG Laboratory. What I like about the solo story system is that it's about as simple as an emulator can get, which is always a big plus with me.

Option 2. Running a historical World War II skirmish campaign, using the Platoon Forward solo campaign generator, which I just purchased recently from Too Fat Lardies, along with a set of simple rules such as FUBAR or Men of Frost.

Several years ago I did a lot of WWII skirmish gaming (back when my painting was absolutely horrid, so I won't bother to show any of my old minis here -- they really stink). Some recent posts by Jagatai (B/X WWII adaptation project), the Angry Lurker (Operation Sealion project), and various posts by Big Lee on his blog have got me thinking about WWII again. I'm feeling very tempted to paint up a few squads of 1/72 plastics, maybe a vehicle or two, and have at it.

I have to confess, even though I don't want to commit to anything at this early date, that I am leaning toward the World War II idea right now.

  1. Given my current obsession with WW2, I think you can guess which one I hope you pick; but it should be a good time either way.
