Why I'm So Fired Up Right Now

I was heavily into D&D in middle school, high school and college, but I haven't done any role-playing with a group since. It's one of those things that fell by the wayside when I started grad school, then hunted for a job, then pushed toward tenure, etc. Not having a gaming group during all that time hasn't helped. But after haunting the OSR regions of the blogosphere, I've been burning to play a game again, and now I'm stoked because I've finally taken the plunge and joined my first play-by-post Labyrinth Lord game.

I lurked for a while on the Goblinoid forums, spied on games that were already running, decided it looked like a blast, and now I'm in. I suspect it'll be a while before the group fills up enough for us to start playing but I am so fired up about getting back into the game, I just had to share my enthusiasm with folks who would get it.

(P.S. – if there's anyone out there interested in joining that game (sandbox with Labyrinth Lord Advanced Edition Companion) check out the Goblinoid Games Forum and look in the "Gamer Gatherings" section under "Looking for players for an LL AEC sandbox game.")

  1. Might actually do that but I have never D&D'd before?

  2. If it's something you think you'd enjoy, you definitely should give it a go. The nice things about all the OSR rules is that they're pretty easy to get your head around, and many of them (such as LL, for example) are available for free online. My suggestion, if you think pbp would interest you, is to do as I did, check out some ongoing games, and if you like what you see, look over the "gamer gathering" listing for GMs starting up new games and looking for players. They let you know what kind of campaign they're running (for example, sandbox), how often they expect players to post, and so on. Then you just join the forum and ask the GM (maybe including a little about yourself, gaming experience and expectations, etc. -- you can see my request to enter the game at the link in the post).

If you were thinking about trying to get into the game I just entered, even better! I believe you'd make a stout adventuring companion.

  3. I've tried play by post, and unfortunately it is a poor fit for my attention span. At the beginning, I'm fired up and impatient at how slow things are moving, and after a while I lose interest due to the pace, and I've come back to find games that were waiting on my input to continue.

  4. Doc: Yes, I'm figuring the pace will be slow, though countering this is the advantage (for me) that it should fit my schedule quite nicely.

  5. I've never actually been involved in a real roleplaying game before so this is very interesting. I hope you keep us informed on the progress of your game.

  6. Dan: I definitely plan to! Given the slow pace of pbp/pbem, I'll probably put up a report once per month, more or less.

  7. Hey Bard. Tim and his buddies play by Skype. Have you ever tried that?

Glad you're getting back in the game. Have tons of fun. And a groovy day.

  8. Hi Whisk! Great to hear from you! You know, skype is another option I've thought about but my schedule the past year or two has been really yucky (work-wise), so I've hesitated to go that route for fear of letting down other players by an inability to play regularly. But it looks like by the end of the coming school year things will settle down, and I plan to look into the skype option as well, since it sounds like it really works well for a lot of people.

Hope you're not working too hard on Etsy and other stuff (unless it's work you enjoy, in which case, go for it!). You have a groovy day too!
